stray thought: after all the baby steps figure skating has been taking to be *less* gendered over the years (see: reducing free skate jumping passes for the men; removing spiral sequence and layback requirements for the women) i'd hate to see the sport turn into, like, gymnastics

some people approach figure skating more as a sport than an art (frankly, i fell in that camp for most of my youth), and while it might not play well for audiences i totally get why the athletes themselves go for it

the idea of having a technical element-only category has been thrown around some, but not with any seriousness i don't think - so for now at least the singles' disciplines are what they are

i'm sure most would love to be able to do both, but a person only has so much energy and time, haha. the artistry is something that tends to develop with age, but as athletes they're usually done by their mid to late twenties, so.

and in fact the 2021 revision places *more* weight on quality of execution than before, so what you saw in the men's event is really not what was expected to happen

the fact that most guys' technical scores far surpass their program component scores is more an accident of history than anything else; the judging has been adjusted to try to keep up with trends in the sport, but there's a limit to how far that can go

anyway the program component scores are scaled as they are to give them approximately the same weight as the technical score (when the system was originally devised in like 2004). the women's raw PCS aren't meaningfully higher than the men's, i don't know where that argument came from

largely because it looked better for TV! the fact that the women aren't really doing the same is probs bc the risk-taking is/was mostly happening in russia, which is banned from isu competition post-ukraine invasion
