The smokefree generation is VERY nearly law. A resounding vote in the House of Lords in favour. The UK will shortly become the first country in Europe to phase out the sale of tobacco to the next generation. Quite a moment.

My first memory of being ill is when I had measles as a kid
The morbidity and mortality of this disease allowed to run unchecked is high. Children may die
This is engineered by grifters & bad actors, exploiting parental concerns
Wish Iβd had the vaccine.
Protect your kids by vaccinating them now
"This is all part of how we reach a point where smoking becomes obsolete."
Watch ASH CE @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social on BBC Breakfast this am discussing new Government proposals to extend smokefree places to reduce the harm from tobacco in England .
"It's an important question to be asking. The intention behind the proposals is particularly in reference to protecting children."

πThe Tobacco and Vapes Bill will begin Report Stage on the 24th Feb.
π’ Last year, 1200 public health professionals shared their support for the Bill and urged faster progress. We are pleased that the Govt listened and the Bill is now moving much more quickly. π
Now letβs get the Bill passed! πͺ
ποΈToday is World Cancer Day.
Smoking is the leading preventable cause of cancer.
Todayβs National Cancer Plan reinforces the Governmentβs commitment to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and the smokefree generation policy that will ensure our children do not grow up with the cancers caused by smoking.

π ASH data shows that only 25% of adults know the truth about cigarette filters β that they provide no health benefit to people who smoke
As our CE @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social says, filters are a βmarketing con to keep people smoking, protecting tobacco industry profitsβ π¬

Great to join the South East Tobacco Alliance as their roadshow visited Surrey. Their region-wide campaign is telling smokers about the mental health benefits of quitting and busting the myths that smoking improves mental health. Lots more to come in the next few weeks

2οΈβ£ASH's Chief Executive @hazelcheeseman.bsky.socialβs opinion piece in the Grocer shares the opportunities that the smokefree generation presents to retailers, both for their business and community π
www.thegrocer.co.uk/comment-and-...
With just under a year to go until the smokefree generation takes effect, ASH CEO @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social has written to retailers to discuss what the policy means for businesses and highlight the long-term benefits of the policy for retailers and for childrenβs health.
06.01.2026 16:16 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 1 π 1
Retailers themselves support the policy, and @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social has emphasised that the policy is straightforward and workable π
The policy only requires an update to age-of-sale signage and routine ID checks against a fixed date of birth, making checks simple for retailers π

ASH was delighted to welcome Baroness Merron to our AGM yesterday. Her vision for a smoke-free future is inspiring and one weβre determined to achieve together.
Huge congratulations to former Chief Executive of ASH Deborah Arnott for winning the @btsrespiratory.bsky.social President's Medal last night.
As BTS said, Deborah has worked tirelessly for more than twenty years to reduce the harm caused by tobacco, and this award is very well deserved!
While there's some welcome measures in the budget, it's also a missed opportunity for further action that would have benefited both health and public finances.
ASH CE @hazelcheeseman.bsky.social responds to the Budget.
