Kant not only maintains that the determination of the principle of morality requires an isolated and pure metaphysics, but also that we must attend to empirical knowledge of the human being in order to construct a system of duties and to make their application possible.

Moral anthropology does not constitute a second, impure ethics in Kant, but rather a body of pragmatic knowledge that conditions the possibility of applying pure morality within the social experience of the human being as a citizen of the world.

Here we seek to shed light on Kant’s obscure reference to a “moral anthropology” in the Groundwork and the Metaphysics of Morals, which we attempt to situate within the broader framework of Kant’s practical philosophy.
