Maureen Cleave describing the Rolling Stones to Evening Standard readers in 1964. I think this is my favourite passage in all music writing. It's packed with detail and tension, but nothing is unnecessary.

So I'll be back around then. We'll be trying to raise a bit of money for Centrepoint, bearing in mind that there are a bunch of people who have nowhere to go this evening. gofund.me/637d21d0 ENDS FOR NOW πŸŽ„πŸ›οΈ

Listened to this a while back having only a basic idea of the Enron scandal, but had no idea the scale of the crimes they committed. Unfathomable that they could make any kind of comeback from that position.

Apropos of nothing. Oasis disbanded the season before Man City ended a 35-year wait for a major trophy and they reformed earlier this season.

Same - I think I was 11 or 12 when I read the Rats trilogy, completly terrified me in the best way. Fortunately, my parents were fans of Stephen King and that lead on to another wonderful terrifying journey. I do wonder what my reaction would have been to The Rats had I been older.

The Booker in the 1970s: 10 novels that are well worth rediscovering, five decades later | The Booker Prizes The Booker shortlists of the 1970s are of exceptionally high quality, and while some of the novels may have fallen out of fashion, they’re essential volumes for any keen reader’s library

Which judge resigned because the books were "mere pornography"? Which author, according to another judge, "puts one off sex"? Which book did Saul Bellow dismiss as a "tinkling teacup thing"? Who refused to give the prize to a book about cannibalism?

I wrote about the Booker Prize in the 1970s:

A British pensioner whose bland sandwiches gained him unexpected fame in China has died. Keith Brown, a retired engineer known on Chinese social media as
"Old Dry Keith", became a hit when his Chinese wife Zhang Jian began to post videos of him assembling the ham and cheese sandwiches he liked to eat. Chinese observers were grimly fascinated by his dry, boring sandwiches, and his gentle, stoic manner - and he built up a cult following. "We go from questioning the dry old man, to understanding the dry old man, to becoming the dry old man," observed one cultural commentator.
