SNEEZING It is widely reported that today in the year 600, Pope Gregory the Great officially decreed that ‘God Bless You’ is the correct response to use when someone sneezes. The story relates to the plague which was rife at the time, with sneezing being an indicator that one is suffering. Certainly, the blessing was well established by 750AD but there seems to be little evidence that the origin being the Pope is correct. Folk belief ties the blessing to the expulsion of the soul from the body, meaning that evil spirits might be able to enter.

UNLEASHING A CURSE It was today in 1923 that archaeologist Howard Carter finally opened the inner burial chamber of the tomb of King Tutankhamun. Popular newspaper reporting developed the idea that he also unleashed a curse at the same time. A combination of coincidence, misreporting and public desire for a good story has fuelled the idea to this day.
