I am sort of a sucker for “the implications” of the monster overall. The first film’s ending basically told you this thing cheats, and so the second film leaned into it more. The monster doesn’t care about these people’s personal journeys so the metaphor feels less of an issue for 2 imo.

I kind of like how they lean into that though. This thing is an evil vile monster that outright cheats for the sake of feeding off of misery and it’s apparently getting stronger. I want the third film to commit to 2’s ending, to be honest.

Smile 2 imo is just having fun with the concept of exploring what if the smile demon possessed a pop star. I think 1 takes itself too seriously and 2 is a bit less concerned with pretending it’s a serious look at mental illness.
