I guess the moral argument is not to use so as to not artificially boost their engagement metrics which they use as justification to retrain models and expand investment but there are a lot of really sophisticated models you can run just off a normal PC

They will and are continually retraining these things but when you actually use it it’s relying on the model weights that are already trained - the models are big so complicated requests can still take a long time to run but not really different than other models

You don’t have to worry about water usage (the paper people cite on that has a ton of flaws) & the electricity is largely in the training which was done before you interacted with it
