A Meta-analytic Review of the Effectiveness of Spacing and Retrieval Practice for Mathematics Learning - Educational Psychology Review Spaced retrieval practice harnesses two well-studied phenomena: the spacing effect, where spacing out practice over several sessions leads to a gain in retention compared to massed practice in one ses...

Happy publication day to first author @ewanmurray.bsky.social! A lot of hard work by Ewan went into this, so it is great to see if fully published.

Part 1: From Gorilla to Tidy Data in 5 Easy Steps

Someone in my dept. made a data wrangling in Gorilla tutorial back in 2020, if that helps with any inspiration for the gorilla side of things: emljames.github.io/GorillaR/Gor...

Gorilla Experiment Builder We help ambitious behavioural scientists run novel online experiments easily

I think Gorilla can combine all the questionnaires for you now, so maybe Big 5, demo Qs and a simple task like digit span would make different files you’d have to combine? There’s lots of open source tasks you could use for the example to set it up quick app.gorilla.sc/openmaterials

A couple of months ago they put out an option to have all the tasks go to a single file - which makes it a bit easier! But, still needs plenty of wrangling - I wouldn’t want to do it by hand

03.03.2025 08:06 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Maybe Qualtrics versus Gorilla would be a good comparison of wrangling data in a wide versus long format? Could show how to change between the two

A picture of the best ramen I ever had. Spent my evening googling best ramen in Singapore, I found this guy who goes round hundreds in Sg and Japan - he uses a machine to measure salt levels and β€œbrix” which is a measure of the amount of dissolved solids in a liquid to test for quality.

Landed back in the UK. Definitely learnt a lot working with Steven Pan’s lab on our pretesting project. Also, managed to eat exceptionally well on a budget in the Hawker Centres too!

Thanks for sharing Jeremy!! Your lab website really nicely designed! Clicking β€œreinstate context” to get back to the top of the page is a great touch πŸ˜‚

No help sorry, but I hope you get some good suggestions! I’ve wanted to reimplement some of the classic models to get a better understanding, but never found any easy to access datasets - my few emails asking for data β€œavailable upon request” always read unanswered too πŸ˜…

Memory-sky: I'm going to be teaching a new (open!) grad course in the spring, where we read about and implement some memory models (and ideally for them to some small datasets). Looking for suggestions to include!

I could go "classic" (Hopfield nets, SAM, TCM, etc.), or "modern" with newer stuff πŸ€”

I had an old copy of the the brothers karamazov that had a few of kind of pages, I didn’t know what was going on. Couldn’t bring myself to cut them so I just read them at a really weird angle πŸ˜…

Having a great time on a EPS study visit to the National University of Singapore - this cat is permanently chilling outside the Psychology building - many signs saying not to feed him as he’s getting too chonky

Great list! Linking your first and last two points, I found it useful to explicitly let students know that retrieval practice can (and should be) effortful. It might feel difficult, but the more effort you have to expend the more effective it will be in the long run.
