Led by @hanjabrrr.bsky.social, @damienfarine.bsky.social, and I, we combined ECG and GPS tracking from a whole group of vulturine guineafowl to show that collective movements, and especially attempting to lead under disagreement greatly increased Heart Rates.

Leading collective movements benefits individuals, giving choice among patches or first access to food, but how does negotiating who leads (or failing to get their way) impact potential leaders?
Our work @currentbiology.bsky.social finds physiological costs of disagreement and collective movements
Out now: The physiological costs of leadership
We reveal that initiating movements—especially when attempting to initiate against a majority and when there is directional conflict—drives elevated heart rates in vulturine guineafowl
