It's possible the decision to not play another game is regretted once the team and staff sleep on it a night. But imagine thinking you were in the playoff then someone asking about your enthusiasm participating in a random bowl in the immediate aftermath.

I assume people were just as mad about Iowa State and Kansas State? Will not be investigating further.

Could be wrong but I don't think Notre Dame (or any contender) skipping a bowl is going to be a standard non-playoff thing. This feels far more like "you weren't just a contender but in the field and then everything went your way on conference title weekend and they still ripped your guts out."
