#WHM A different type of resource today & #ODNB ongoing programme to increase its coverage of women - the brilliant Lynne Walker has written many of these on women in/and architecture. See this for more on the programme of updates: www.oxforddnb.com/fileasset/AM...

Had to choose this germinal book from 1998 for #IWD - so important for expanding ideas of architectural agency & showing women’s centrality to the project of modernism.

YouTube video by Royal Movie Trailer THE BRIDE (2025) – Official Trailer | Christian Bale & Jessie Buckley Horror Remake

Went to see The Bride! It’s somewhere between bonkers & brilliant - I really enjoyed it & consider it, in part, a fine homage to the original Bride, the mighty Elsa Lanchester. www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7fi...

Maybe not arch hist per se but v influential on it. From 1983, this book contributed to a wave of scholarship which explored architecture as a site for the production of gendered identities, often, tho’ not exclusively, in the domestic sphere. #WHM

Wasn’t going to blow my own trumpet on this thread but given the AJ article here’s a book from 2017 that covers a century of architect women’s work. Part of the major AAXX100 project led by Lynne Walker & me, which celebrated the centenary of women’s admission to the AA #WHM

Diminishing the achievements of women architects feeds into today’s inequalities So many important female pioneers in architecture are barely remembered, let alone celebrated, write Biba Dow and Ros Diamond

There’s decades of work by women architectural historians exploring the work of women in/and architecture - it would be great if this work weren’t forgotten/ completely disregarded. See my posts doe the last few days!!!@news.architectsjournal.co.uk

Redacted emails raise questions over the BBC’s relationsh... Internal BBC emails show how a project that may have shed light on the broadcaster’s negotiations with the royal household was quietly shelved

The BBC WAC Campaign has after months of chasing through FOI uncovered the motivation for the 11th hour pulling of a public catalogue of its written archives. This falls short of the basic requirement of a major archive as well as the Charter itself.

The only recent publication that considers Jane Drew & her work both independently and with Max Fry. (For the purposes of this thread I am bestowing temporary womanhood on male co-authors!).

it’s #WHM, so I thought I’d post about books that explore women in/& architecture/built env’t & the women who write them. Women architectural historians go rather not seen. So today, an excellent book from 1994 & a link to a short piece I wrote about it. womenwritingarchitecture.org/annotation/e...

Recommend a visit to The Pankhurst Centre - the house in which the WSPU was formed. It’s really well done & super interesting. Has anyone done work on how the suffragettes learnt their militant/military techniques??? Self generated or learnt from others???

Being spoiled by BBC radio - whole day devoted to Kenneth Williams on 4extra , on @sixmusic.bsky.social @cerysmatthews.bsky.social Neil Brand talking about music & silent movies - fascinating for me as my great g’dad Enoch Leeming played violin in the orchestra of the Alhambra cinema in Edinburgh!

Good to see an article on SBAC listing that acknowledges its significance as one element in a landscape of publicly-funded culture. Re-posting the link to my Co-authored article that explores this idea in detail - www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Open Access so freely available.

Still delighted to see this listed. But given the current undermining of humanities & culture in U.K., more than being exemplary Brutalism, the SBAC’s significance lies in it forming part of a resounding assertion of the value of the arts to national life & as something worthy of state support.

Very much enjoyed seeing Babyface (1933) today - great performance by Barbara Stanwyck & fab costumes too plus surprising reference to Nietzsche! Part of picturehouse cinema’s series on pre-code Hollywood films.
