06.03.2026 22:11 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It's a fairly early system and will probably need a full replacement with the new equipment. That's the big problem with CBTC, they only last 20 or so years before everything needs an update.
05.03.2026 20:42 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0In the center city tunnel yeah. The system is not "safety critical" in that regard.
05.03.2026 20:18 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0To answer your question I wasn't expecting this level of performance hit. Like SEPTA's PTC implementation slowed down the Regional Rail Division 3-4 minutes per trip. That's what I was expecting.

The specific way they implemented the CBTC was a choice that is independent of the form of signaling.
~2004 the center city tunnel CBTC overlay blew up service so badly they had to turn it off during rush hour. They eventually managed to fix it and one doesn't even know it's there.
Ah! Yeah SEPTA is still benefiting from the "power/coast" system, but operators are expected to be able stop short and use a switch iron.
05.03.2026 04:06 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0SEPTA doesn't bother with a full stop likely because they have the infrastructure to quickly fix minor derailments and the trolley lines aren't in critical parts of the city.
04.03.2026 23:34 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0That's one of the points I've heard, but the police also went on strike. Further analysis is needed, but either situation is worth publicity.

I'd like to read an Atlantic article about the relationship between disorder and serious crime.
I have other theories, but I wanted to hear from others about this.
You know the high crime era was a thing and if anything was going to change the faregates it should have been that. What was different then.
