This is the speaker's point -- this can be undone. These companies COULD choose to address it but why would they? I'm not proposing any remedies bc this tech is controlled by ~50 ppl who's entire value proposition is value extraction/theft - on every level.

96% of content scooped in these tools is English speaking. They mostly pull in English sources and do not effectively train on non-native English content bc that's not a priority for those companies. They're building for English speakers. #ColonialismNeverWentAway

This just underscores the paradigm these folks are trapped in. They cannot engage in global research enterprise w/o "sounding" natively English. So, yes, it's a nice tool, but the need for it exactly demonstrates the systemic exclusion of the current system. The tools will make it worse

Core problem is training data - only really looking at WOS/SCOPUS but not tools like @scielo.org African Research Journals etc. The training data must be dramatically widened to reflect non-English research.

It's not a question of guardrails, but who will make them. #Equity has to be designed, it will not happen naturally. These systems are working exactly as designed. NOT a technical problem, it's a choice problem which means can be unmade. Not easy or quick, but solvable.
