The Governmentβs current plan is failing single adults, with potentially long-term impacts on their mental & physical wellbeing.
While the new Housing Plan has a welcome focus on children & family homelessness, we cannot allow for single adults to be by-passed when investing in solutions.

17,112 people living in emergency accommodation.
Since January 2025, the data shows a staggering increase of 1,826 people in emergency accommodation.
It is unacceptable that this crisis is deepening, particularly among single adults who are the largest cohort in emergency beds.

Each year, there is typically a reduction in December figures due to the Christmas period. This decrease often reflects people being temporarily offered respite by friends or family.
Although the figures are lower than the previous report, this still marks an increase of 12.6% since December 2024.

Black and white photo of a childβs toy bunny sits scattered amongst other toys. Yellow text overlays the image reading: 16,734 People in emergency homeless accommodation.
16,734 people were living in emergency accommodation in December 2025, including 5,188 children π
While any reduction in homelessness is welcome, it must be sustained, continuous and on a larger scale. There are serious concerns that numbers are set to rise again in the coming months.

Irelandβs population is ageing, and as a society we must plan for this demographic shift, not only for humanitarian reasons, but also out of economic necessity. The message is clear: failing to invest in appropriate supports now will lead to far greater social and financial costs in the years ahead.

I would very much welcome ideas from the landlords and property owner associations as to how we end homelessness given that some of the solutions we propose are seen as unviable.
We'll only end homelessness by all coming together for the good of Irish society.

The data presented from the RTB doesn't substantiate that claim. Yes, smaller landlords are leaving but larger landlords are entering the market.

Rents are unaffordable. The private rental sector is one of the leading causes of homelessness in Ireland.
We are told that we can't have no fault eviction bans or greater regulation because landlords are leaving in their droves.

Simon Communities of Ireland are deeply concerned at these figures as we once again see a further rise in people experiencing homelessness in Ireland.
These figures are a stark reminder that we must act urgently to provide support, affordable housing, and long-term solutions.
