The painting challenges us to consider whose work we choose to value and who ultimately contributes to a healthy society - the worker, artists, intellectuals or those in the shadows?

Madox Brown transforms workers into modern heroes. Working classes are centred: light bathes a group of muscle bound manual labourers, a young girl cradles an orphaned baby in her arms. The baby looks out from the canvas to an uncertain future.

Featuring pioneering artist Emma Sandys, the Kashmiri connection to Pre-Raphaelite art, Bodichon, Sawyer, the Madox Browns, William Morris, John Atkinson Grimshaw and more!
