When the HIV epidemic began, Black communities were made invisible in the data.

Separating new HIV/AIDS cases by race wasn’t done until several years into the epidemic.

Today, February 7th marks the 100th anniversary of the 1st Black History week.

Founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. He chose the 2nd week of February because it fell between the birthdays of Abe Lincoln & Fredrick Douglas.

In 1976, it would officially become Black History Month.

American Colonization Society (1816-1964) The American Colonization Society (ACS), also known as the American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Color in the United States, emerged in 1816 as a national organization dedicated to promot...

The American Colonization Society focused on purchasing and freeing enslaved people, w/ the goal of sending them & free blacks to West Africa. The ACS founded the colony of Liberia in 1830, where they sent approx. 12,000 black emigrants but many questioned the motives of the org.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, considered the "Father of Black History," was the 2nd Af-Am to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1912. He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and The Journal of Negro History. He launched Negro History Week in 1926.
