My point here is that if we want to look at game console history from a global perspective--and we should--then we cannot treat regional histories as isolated from one another. They never have been.

Observations that "well we really didn't care much about consoles here at the time" and "we liked Sega better anyway once we started caring" are fair enough. But to say the impact of the crash was purely local is myopic.

Also, had the crash not cleared the way for the undisputed reign of the NES in North America, considering the console didn't gain a strong foothold in Europe or Latin America, it's doubtful Nintendo's current global business would look as it does today. If they didn't give up outside Japan entirely.

Had Coleco not left the console business, the eventual Sega boom in Europe and Brazil might have looked very different, with Sega either partnering with or continuing to imitate Coleco.

Coleco had been in talks with Sega about distributing ColecoVision in Japan. Sega's subsequent SG-1000 console used nearly identical hardware. It became the basis for the Master System, which became part of the Mega Drive's hardware as well.

It's wrong to say that the 1980s game console crash didn't impact game console history outside the United States or North America. The Japanese console market that eventually reached the rest of the world was directly influenced by the American one...
