Italian freelance journalists are not alright - The Fix According to the investigation “Come ti senti?”, 87% reported suffering from stress, 73% from anxiety, and more than 40% experienced burnout syndrome.

I'll also say, I feel the popularity of open world games and RPGs is at least partly due to being able to get 100+ hours of enjoyment out of a single purchase.

For people who can't spend much on games, being a time sink is a feature, not a bug.
