Hi! Have been for a while but only seriously coming to it now. I can't abide some other platforms anymore and would like different and better conversations and connections. Glad you could see a Tod sunset again!

... It can be big or small and will depend on individual tastes and sensory profiles BUT often unexpected moments of so-called natural beauty fit the bill! This sunset was entirely unexpected and richer than I've seen in a while. I felt so uplifted after. I do love me some awe!

A glowing sunset. The sky is light purple with streaks of orange and yellow and pink cloud radiating up from where the sun has dipped below the side of the valley. Bare trees line the side of a canal. Ducks float on the canal, seeming to swim in the colours reflected from the sky.

Experiences of awe and wonder seem to help us somehow gain perspective, requantify things and - I think - help us use our senses to anchor us in our own world. Awe is a great way for me to exploit my sensitive senses, instead of blocking them out. What generates awe for each may be different...

What do you mean, slow is fast? ๐Ÿคช

How can slow be faster than fast? Huh?
Well, "slow can be fast" is one of my own principles and it helps me to remember/allow myself to take the path I need to at tough times when I am frustrated. I wrote about it in my newsletter, which is here for those who want to see. eepurl.com/i8MdqI

simply plan to not actively strive towards anything that isn't driven purely by intrinsic motivation, interest or enthusiasm in winter. I kind of did it instinctively with turning to games but this was intuitive rather than planned. I choose a different planned rhythm for 2025. #AuDHD #Autism #ADHD

A few days of sun and my mood and motivation are noticeably up. Light levels do interact with neurotransmitters, which is new knowledge for many of my coachees.

considering what accommodations and game design features/ways of running a game we can put in place to create fun AND offer some of the wellbeing benefits I have had. I suspect it'll all be possible to bring into coaching as well, with luck. #DnD

A pile of soft clothes - a sports bra, alpaca wool socks, comfy blue joggers, a soft sweat wicking blue t shirt and a soft yellow uv hoodie.

Here are my "soft clothes" that I wear when I want to travel comfortably and reduce my sensory burden so I can concentrate on getting through customs - they also work for post-meltdown self-care in the middle of winter. ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you're realising that you're autistic and you've not thought about your sensorium before, I just wanted to share this information in case it helps. As we are all different, as always, adopt, adapt or discard what I've written according to your needs and preferences. If you'd like

Such a difference. I don't get burned out as badly or anywhere near as often anymore now I try to influence my sensory environment where I can and it's something I can influence. I have much more energy and am less anxious now. I also feel like I have some say in my day unfolding how I'd hope.

By following accounts who write about such things, communicating with other autistic people (when you want to and accessibly) and by looking at books by neurodivergent professionals, plus maybe talking to occupational health if they're available and clued up in your workplace, it's possible...

When I work with people on this, the missing piece is often a) knowing what supports match what situation b) deciding for oneself which tweaks are going to feel most doable, accessible, and offer the biggest reward in comfort for the least effort (quick, big benefits while conserving resource).

Becci is on a plane. Her long hair is tied back. The plane has blue low lighting as it's night time. She is wearing polarised glasses and noise cancelling chunky black headphones and she is grinning because she is excited. She wears a blue t shirt because it is soft and flexible for travelling.

If you want to go further, you can then map what you've noted about your sensorium to certain sensory supports or environmental tweaks e.g. noise on bus > noise cancelling headphones, bright lights in supermarket > polarised glasses, smells of cleaning products > change to unscented brand.

Some people like to at least have a drawing or written list or anything else you can work with enjoyably to help you tangibly record your sensory joys, sensory icks, what sensations lift you up and which burn energy or add to your nervous system's load. That's enough for some people.

21.01.2025 06:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There are coaches, therapists and psychologists - some of whom are also autistic and/or #ADHD - who can have structured conversations with you to help. We can't always access these, however. There is much learning you can do solo if you have some ideas of what to write down or speak aloud.

21.01.2025 06:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I can't speak for other countries but in the UK, when you discover later in life you are autistic, there's little support on offer and much needs to be figured out informally or through trial and error. It might help if people could have the option to be guided through mapping their "sensorium".

Working through reflective exercises and coaching conversations helped me to work out where I need to use certain sensory supports and why, and how I could gently tweak my sensory environment in ways that actually felt within my influence to have a manageable sensory experience, day to day.
