One of my most boomer opinions is that one of the best things you can do for kids is help them learn how to organize their time and operate in professional adult spaces by making them have a part time job in high school AND college.

I've had a job since I was 14. That was definitely a bit too early, but I genuinely cannot comprehend people who think HIGH SCHOOL is too early for kids to have a part time job.

From the New England Journal of Medicine article about the clinical study, and almost as incredible: "No associated dose-limiting toxic effects were noted among the participants."

So, I know it's a hard day, and hopefully seeing this will be as cheering for you as it was for me. This is along the lines of the HIV vaccine progress news, to me: bsky.app/profile/hors...

My brother died almost six years ago now from glioblastoma. This is incredible. Unprecedented. AMAZING. Please, please, never stop funding science and medical research.

the chemistry these two have is so insane you can almost taste it, or feel it, or otherwise sense it, right through the screen.

I miss my dogs so much. But I do really love being able to jaunt off for a weekend and not have to make care arrangements first.

Given some of the current videos of 'wine moms' circulating right now, I want to bring this one back, because it remains absolutely true.

it's very true. Part of me recognizes that as messed up, and part of me realizes that it prepared me pretty well for the reality that for the rest of my life, no one else would be sympathetic either, so I'd better figure it out. :(

Amazon brain drain finally caught up with AWS column: When your best engineers log off for good, don’t be surprised when the cloud forgets how DNS works

there was a really interesting article in the Register about some of the underlying issues, too (no wall o' text, either!): www.theregister.com/2025/10/20/a...

Whenever I see someone complaining about a bad review I immediately go "O HO HO! IT COULD BE SO MUCH WORSE!" and then I send them this absolutely scathing masterpiece and it always cheers them up!

Some of his writing is superb. Some of it I find incredibly tedious. But I despise the fact that every writer attempting the Great American Novel for the next 75 years flinched from an adjective on their page like it might inject poison into their veins.

Sure, but in swinging the pendulum too far the other direction, they abandoned all the music and rhythm and richness of language and took it down to brass tacks. Adjectives are not the enemy.

It's like if literally every poet tried to mimic e e cummings in every single attempt they made in verse for a century, and mostly did it poorly and boringly. One was fine, an entire national literary output based on one dude's verbal minimalism was very much NOT.

Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses

Have you ever read "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses" by Mark Twain? It is a masterpiece and I think he'd agree with you on Mohicans. But it's more that he changed the direction and evolution of writing in such a violently cramped and proscribed way that it stifled literature for a century.

And yet they are so screamingly funny that a ton of people just straight-up miss the profundity.

Dickens is one of those writers where "he was paid by the word and it shows" is actually factually correct.
