15.10.2025 22:42 β π 2229 π 495 π¬ 21 π 0The human cost of pushing the envelope is important to take into account, but old Skunk Works shows that you can both push the envelope and do the work to get it right, which IMO is important to recognise when today's tech development treats various human costs as inevitable for progress.
08.10.2025 13:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm actually wrong, the A-12 and SR-71 had zero test fatalities. The drone carrier derivative of the A-12, the M-21, had one (the drowning) after both the A-12 and SR-71 were in service. The A-12 had two in-service fatalities and SR-71 one.

08.10.2025 04:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Crew deaths after ejection was an unfortunately common occurrence in the 50s/60s. Used to be safer ejecting at Mach 3 than taxiing on the runway, even -- zero-zero ejection systems weren't common until the late 60s or so.

07.10.2025 13:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That being said, the things that they *don't* share is the "fuck the cost" nature of running them that the Concorde and SR-71 did. We took the real groundbreaking parts (computer assisted design, knowledge of trans-sonic effects, fucked up space age materials) and now they're firmly the norm.

I wear a dog/jackal rubber mask - the J9 from Maelstrom - while red-rubber-clawed fingers pull back the shawl. I'm holding an orange mug of coffee with the text "FICSIT" on the mug, from Satisfactory. How will it drink coffee you ask. uh uh um you see um um
hot tip for the "who wants to wear latex :D - who wants to put on latex D:" crowd:
brew some coffee!!! only drink it once suited up.
just remember to uh... enjoy it before locking urself into a heavy rubbr mask,, π₯Ί
I think that the Concorde and SR-71 *are* the path we chose. Sure, we're not doing supersonic madness all the time, but I'd argue there's far more in common with an Airbus A350 and the Concorde or SR-71 than the A350 and the Boeing 707.
07.10.2025 13:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Huh? The A-12 had two test fatalities (one ejection seat malfunction, one drowning) and one operational, and the SR-71 zero (one fatality in its whole lifetime).
The planes did their jobs, and they did them extremely well -- pushing the design envelope to allow the F-117 and Raptor to exist.
