Ealaíontóirí digiteacha!
Má tá sibh ag lorg inspioráid, tá comórtas againn!

Ní mór iarratais don chomórtas a chur isteach faoin dáta deiridh (15ú Deireadh Fhómhair) is fógrófar na buaiteoirí go gairid ina dhiadh sin. Cuirfimid na saothair bhuaiteacha ar ár meáin shóisialta.
Go n-éirí libh!

Caorthann/Caorann/Rowan, a tree you’ll find bursting with red berries this autumn, crops up regularly in the tales of the fianna. In Bruíon Chaorthainn, Fionn and his men are trapped by their enemies in a magical hall made of rowan wood.

What were the seasons like in the time of the Fianna? 🍂

Well, according to Oisín, they tended to have:

“A foggy winter,
A frosty spring,
A varied summer
and a sunny autumn.”

Here’s to hoping we have a sunny autumn!

English translation of the Gàidhlig:

“Reddening above at the time of lying down,
Fionn would awaken early in the morning;
Reddening above in the early morning;
Fionn would sleep again.”

If you’re wondering whether to get out of bed on this mid-harvest Monday, perhaps it’s worth consulting Fionn mac Cumhaill’s sleep schedule, which according to the folklore in our database, revolves around the reddening of the sky –

We might be biased, but we think Bran and Sceolang are frontrunners for the best dogs in folklore 🐾

Love Under Threat: Reconsidering the Experiences of Noísiu and Diarmaid* | Reconsidering Consent and Coercion

A very interesting article by @emmettaylor.bsky.social about coercion of Naoise and Diarmaid in medieval recensions of these tales: www.brepolsonline.net/doi/full/10.... It will certainly make us rethink oral retellings! #fianna #celticstudies

Collected in 1897, MacLaggan MML 3024-3075, p. 3037. We are processing it right now to go up on the database soon. Also, Uibhist folklore tells us Fionn had 12 old women making the ale, while Mayo tradition says it was his 12 sons. There's a mystery to uncover... #fionnmaccumhaill #finnmaccool

(En) According to Islay folklore, the Fianna had a brewery to make heather-ale. This should be at the heart of Celtic Studies.

Freagairt/Answer

"Idir" a b' ainm dhan chù.

"Idir" (=at all) is the name of the dog. This really only works in Gaelic. :P

An Ossianic riddle heard yesterday in Lewis (also here: fionnfolklore.org/en/lays/rf01) :

Chaidh Fionn dhan bheinn is cha deach idir, bha a bhean tinn is cha robh idir.
(Fionn went to the mountain and didn't at all, his wife was sick and wasn't at all)

Freagairt gu h-ìosal / Answer below ;)

An interesting exchange today with a man in Steòrnabhagh, talking about the Fianna. He mentioned Oisean still being a first name in Lewis, and Osgar being used not as a first name but as a nickname. He was not sure why, though it may have been due to the man's strength. #fionnfolkloreproject #ossian
