Don't let the chores steal away all of your time. Think of them as part-time work - maybe set 2 days a week as "work" days to take care of the bulk of that stuff and the rest of your time is for whatever you like: the new job, the intentional kicking back, the new hobby etc 🧵 5/

In all of these approaches, I urge you to set limits on "new work" = "me time" vs the everyday chores, home administration etc. Otherwise the things we all squish into part of our day while working can take over ALL of your time in retirement, because they are never "finished" 🧵 4/

(3) Motivation in either structured or less structured life can be set toward specific targets: maybe a long term big target (2nd career, learn a new skill, help out a good cause through volunteering) or through a collection of short-term targets: Set 3 month goals to gain a new skill etc 🧵 3/

(2) If you've always longed for a more flexible schedule, retirement may give you that option. Motivation can come with new discovery each day. Each morning (or the night before) you make a rough plan for the day, inc the option to just see where life takes you. The thrill is in discovery 🧵 2/

My thoughts about how you stay motivated:

(1) If you like a structured life & particularly enjoyed your work, I suggest finding a new major project - second career? volunteer opportunity? mentoring? that has the shape and feel of work even if not 40 hrs per week.

I wish some major media outlets would do broad reports on the impact of death threats on our politics, and on who's doing them (MAGA men mostly from what I can tell), and why law enforcement appears to be doing so little about them. They are such a big (submerged) part of our politics now.

Wow. If any races in Dallas County are super tight, this will be a huge legal fight as thousands of votes hang in purgatory.
