"[A poem] arises from the tough, delicate, heartbreaking rooting of what-is in its own nonbeing. From that rooting, there arise elemental movements of being: of hunger, of play, of rage, of celebration, of dying...A poem enacts those movements in words."

An outline of a naked woman is embroidered on linen in the same bone white colour as the linen. She stands legs together, her right hand covering her groin, her left hand, palm up, extended slightly to her side. She looks to the right. Her entire body except for her belly is covered in intricate markings representing different neurological sensations. Her face is a mask of green lines, feathery grey lines cover her shoulders and chest. There is a thick band of intricate burgundy stitching around her waist. Her forearms and hands are covered in thick blue undulant lines. Her right leg has bands of burgundy along the muscles, with small dots around them. Her inner left leg has a thick line of blue running up it, with thin branches spreading towards her outer leg.

For this #InternationalWomensDay I’m sharing a symptomatology #embroidery, body map (2016), in which I stitched my #MECFS symptoms freehand over a few months. ME/CFS affects mostly women, and the symptoms are often ignored or not taken seriously because of medical misogyny.

If you're a writer, I encourage you to read widely--across lengths and genres and eras, self-published books and wildly popular books. Each author has a different way of solving the problems presented by a story, and in reading their solutions, you make those solutions available for your own work.

nudging people into this sweet spot is a big part of editing if you're me. there's nothing worse than a book that exhausts you for nothing, or prose that never does anything interesting.

Hinting at Decolonization
Nicola Andrews

Cover: A portrait of Captain Cook is graffitied over to replace his eyes with Xs and his mouth with a frown. Over the entirety of the image is a nearly transparent all caps LAND BACK

From West Auckland to San Francisco, Andrews tracks erasure, co-option, and theft as they appear in western popular culture, the performance of contrition, and the products on our shelves.

For Spite and Rosemary
Odette Augustine

Cover: a sketch in black of a boned corset on a background of parchment washed over with pink watercolour paint

Augustine scratches out the why of her longing, bumps up to a hard truth, flags it, and turns the page over then does it again. We are patience and white page, a lover invested, taking our own notes as she leads the way.

full bias but, if i taught middle school through college (or had kids of those ages—which i do!), i'd keep this around. if you want to take your conversations past land acknowledgements and into our day to day cooptations of indigenous culture, Hinting at Decolonization is a great start.
