If anyone is applying for Clore Emerging Leaders, or is mid application process for the Fellowship or Pulse and would like a chat, I'd be happy to offer support if I can.

Other Pathways
Not mentioned here: festivals of new work, apprenticeships, paid traineeships, work placement, paid placements, youth theatre or outreach activity often feature at many organisations and are also worth checking out if you’re looking for your own pathway into the sector.

Associates Artists
Associates will regularly have their work produced by their organisation during their tenure and may have input into the artistic approach, planning or output of an organisation. They may also run some aspects of the in-house artist development programmes for the venue.

Artist Residencies
A long term paid commitment to an artist's development for 12-18 months. Residencies mean artists are more embedded in an organisation and may mean involvement in artistic conversations, insight into how the organisation is run, and having more time to develop a piece of work.

Seed Commissions
Producing venues offer a contribution to the cost of creating new work and provide dedicated time to develop a piece either for public performance or showcase to industry professionals who might want to produce or programme the work at another venue, a festival, or part of a tour.

New Work R&D
Organisations offer space, time and money to develop new work without the pressure of having to produce/present something to a paying audience by the end of the process. Usually 1-2 weeks free rehearsal space, some funding for the project, and a sharing if desired to the in-house team.

Artist Development Programmes
A cohort are selected for a period of development over a few months. Programmes usually consist of skills workshops, masterclasses, mentoring/coaching, shadowing, networking, and expert help developing new pieces, with a sharing at the end to celebrate the work.

Scratch Nights
Despite the number of scratch nights declining dramatically, there are still venues who provide this essential early career/emerging opportunity. Usually a regularly held showcase for short works in progress with an audience to see if your piece is on the right track.

15.04.2025 13:28 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Workshops & Masterclasses
There's a huge range of events happening across the country which allow theatre makers to hone their craft and develop their skills. From hour-long sessions to weeks-long courses you can find learning opportunities in almost any discipline.

Community Building Initiatives
Many venues are keen to support local artists and offer free co-working / hot-desking space and sometimes free tea, coffee and or printing. Some will have a membership which may include discounted tickets and events. Some places will also offer free rehearsal space.

Artist Development Programmes There are so many ways that venues and companies are supporting artists in Theatre - but who are they for and what do they do?

I thought it'd be useful to share what I've learned about the different types of artist and new work programmes that exist in theatre across the country at the moment. So I've written a post about it here: tinyurl.com/44f4cad5

Opportunities I've found can be broken down into 8 main types...

"Why aren't people making the kind of old-world classical sculptures and oil painting I like anymore?"

I dunno dude why aren't you providing an artist with a full time salary and residence on your property so they can focus on nothing but making one painting for three years.

Legitimately this is why we need universal basic income.
(Well, okay, and a lot of other reasons, but this would be a nice side benefit.) So people can focus on their passions without having to be stretched thin.

The curious case of Benjamin Button making it to the west end is my absolute theatre high this year. LOVE that show - have followed it since it was a cast of 5 at the Southwark Playhouse Little. Such joy!

Roastie dinner with my parents and my family. Had a little moment half way through cooking for everyone - this is what life is about. Cosy times, roast potatoes and the people you love under one roof. Bloody marvellous.
