02.04.2025 19:11 β π 13 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0I will be fine. But people will die and this critical work to end the tobacco use problem became harder and less efficent. The tobacco companies may have won today, but I trust that states, communities, nonprofits, researchers, and advocates will prevail and eliminate commercial tobacco use.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 94 π 14 π¬ 4 π 0Cigarettes are the only consumer product that when used correctly kills the user. If youβre worried about chemicals in cereal and food, wait until you find out about the 7,000 chemicals in cigarettes, including at least 69 known to cause cancer.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 98 π 21 π¬ 2 π 0Despite our progrsss, tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death. Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year. Tobacco companies know we were closing in on them and they used their influence to eliminate this highly effective and efficient work at CDC.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 78 π 10 π¬ 1 π 1We ran the National Youth Tobacco Survey, which is how we know that current tobacco use among HS students has declined dramatically over the last decade to 10.1% (cigarette smoking is at 1.7%!).. and how we know e-cigarettes the most common product used by kids. Itβs how we monitor trends.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 79 π 10 π¬ 1 π 0We provided funding to every state health department to run evidence-based public health programs that help adults quit and prevent kids from starting. We know that these programs are highly effective β states with strong tobacco control programs have seen a $50 return on every program $ spent.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 95 π 12 π¬ 1 π 0Tobacco companies know we were closing in on them and they used their influence to eliminate this important, effective, and efficient work at CDC. Our media campaign (which was on the air today) saved an estimated $7.3 billion in smoking-related healthcare costs in its initial 6 years.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 97 π 10 π¬ 1 π 0CDCβs tobacco program wasnβt eliminated to save money. Federal employee salaries are only about 4% of the Federal budget. The Office on Smoking & Health was eliminated BECAUSE our work is highly efficient and cost effective. Make no mistake that tobacco companies won today.
02.04.2025 06:35 β π 214 π 68 π¬ 3 π 3Today is the end of my 14 years at CDC. My part of the agency (the Office on Smoking & Health) was eliminated and every employee was fired. I loved my job and it was the pleasure of my life to work with such dedicated & brilliant colleagues at CDC (both in tobacco and during my Covid rotations).

Iβm going to have to find my voice on here. Iβm going to be very careful, but would still like to make observations on public health. Alternative is hiking and dog photos and musings about horse racing and Radiohead.
Anyway, here are my dogs on a walk looking at birds.
It has been a weird couple of weeks. But I deleted the other app for good.

My wife and I won a lottery for rare permits to backpack and camp in The Enchantments, the set of alpine lakes in Washington State. We hiked 8-10 miles a day for 3 days and went from 1400ft to over 7500ft of elevation and back. It was an unreal experience.
