WELCH: Mr. Yoho is also the husband of your former spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin?

NOEM: Yes

WELCH: So your former assistant and her husband are the ones that got the DHS no bid contract for $143m. Any dispute about that?

NOEM: No.

Excellent, detailed and quite long read on oil & gas.

Think this misses basic point: reason for writing an academic article is not to produce an academic article; it is through the research for and writing of an academic article that we are able to think, learn, develop ideas, come up with new ideas, collaborate, inspire, etc.

Bernie Sanderโ€™s 2028 litmus test would strangle Americaโ€™s golden goose

Bernie Sanderโ€™s 2028 litmus test would strangle Americaโ€™s golden goose

Surprise! The Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is against my 5% billionaire wealth tax. I wonder why?

If enacted, Bezos would owe $12 billion in taxes, and an average family of 4 would receive a $12,000 direct payment.

Poor Jeff would be left with just $224 billion to survive.

Scary. And from a European perspective hard to believe this is even possible.

Trump's war on elections is hiding in plain sight False claims that foreign government interference caused him to lose in 2020 have been a staple of the diet of lies Trump feeds to his faithful.

I do not traffic in or promote conspiracy theories. But I also refuse to turn a blind eye to what is plainly happening to our democracy.

Muskโ€™s fossil data centres are undoing Teslaโ€™s climate benefit I know you already know the data centres built to power the generative AI software running on X are intensely harmful and wildly polluting, often in breach of rules and regulations.ย You may not knoโ€ฆ

It's a simple way of putting it, but I hope the fact that one group of data centres powering one shitty, evil chatbot for one crappy little social media site undoing most or all of Tesla's entire global climate benefits puts in perspective how WILDLY bloated genAI is as software

Especially batteries, here in Europe we're starting to get zero/ negative power prices whenever the sun comes out! Increasing the gas prices increases the spread that batteries can arbitrage from daytime to evening.

Wir hรคtten die Technologien, die Fรคhigkeit und die Mรถglichkeit, uns von teuren, fossilen Energietrรคgern unabhรคngig zu machen. Es fehlt allein der politische Wille. Man kann es nicht genug betonen.

Dirty Data An ERC investigation looking into the cost of data center infrastructures powering AI and the people paying the price.

For months, ~40 journos across Asia, LatAm & EU delved into the environmental impact of data centers w. the Environmental Reporting Collective.

I reported from Thailand, but as a whole, the project shows how unsustainable (and opaque) the AI data center boom's starting to look.

Economists love to point to insurance as the market-based solution for adaptation - allow premiums to reflect risk and adaptation will follow.

In the real world there are limits to the effectiveness of this approach.

Nice commentary by Jo Weil and Jesse Gourevitch:

Operation Epic Fury Making Sense of the Energy Risks and beyond

A useful piece that underscores the benefit of energy sources that do not have to pass thru the Strait of Hormuz (e.g. sunshine & wind). Renewable energy is an investment in geopolitical resilience.

A quote from Jackie Garton, Interim Head of Corporate Climate Campaigns that reads: "The standards that were originally designed to help foster an emerging voluntary renewable energy market are no longer fit for purpose. Renewable energy is now the fastest growing source of energy, making this a critical moment to ensure the rules fully reflect how power is generated, transmitted and consumed today.โ€

One data centre or one million homes? Mapping Ontario's proposed hyperscaler boom Canadaโ€™s National Observer found and drew from multiple sources to put together a map of planned data centres in Ontario, and found at least 15 projects with a combined capacity of 2,202 MW currently ...

New story out from @cloelogan.bsky.social and me. Data centres are being planned across Ontario, with some using the same amount of electricity as 700,000 homes. Where are they? And why are communities being left in the dark?

one of the problems with the "prediction markets have social utility" thesis is that acquiring true information to beat the markets works better the *shorter* the timeframe before the rest of the market gets that information because you can cash in more quickly x.com/itslirrato/s...
