Warming Winters Sabotage Treesโ€™ Carbon Uptake - Eos In temperate forests, the biomass-building benefits of warmer growing seasons are offset by damaging variability in winter weatherโ€”a disparity that climate models may miss.

Are climate models overestimating the role that northern forests play in storing carbon? New @pnas.org research says yes.

Hot take. The government isnโ€™t subsidizing university budgets. Universities are lending subsidized expertise to research and development that contributes to the public good. Itโ€™s called partnership.

Briefly wandered over to The Other Place to gauge the response to the NASA budget devastation to encounter a bunch of gleeful 'we spend too much money, so this is great.'

TO BE, ONCE AGAIN, PERFECTLY CLEAR, THE BUDGET REQUEST MOVES ALL THIS MONEY TO DEFENSE. IT SPENDS IT. NO MONEY IS SAVED.

I was just told that I have to remove โ€œclimateโ€ from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include โ€œclimateโ€ and other forbidden words. I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

For every dollar of federal research funding in the United States, universities generate between $2.30 and $3.00 of economy activity, much of that in local communities.

That doesnโ€™t even include the return on investment of getting a college or graduate degree, which research also dollars support.

A graph of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at the Mauna Loa observatory, Hawaii, from 1958 to 4th February 2025. It shows carbon dioxide levels rising at an accelerating rate over the decades. This is known to be due to emissions of carbon dioxide from human activity, mainly fossil fuel burning but also deforestation. The first CO2 concentration value in March 1958 was 315 parts per million (ppm). The latest daily value is 426 ppm. The graph also shows a seasonal cycle of a few ppm within each year, which is known to be linked to the growing season in the northern hemisphere causing a temporary uptake of carbon in spring and summer and release in autumn. The graph is produced routinely by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.

Hey #StatsSky, what are you favorite papers to cite when you need to justify something that is obvious (I once had a reviewer ask we justify the use of logistic regression on a binary outcome)
or when you need to push-back on silly reviewer requests (e.g., asking for p-values in table 1)?
