We've just signed the open letter to Peter Kyle and @feryalclark.bsky.social at the Department for Science Innovation & Technology calling on Government to reject Drax Power Station's bid to burn even more trees to power Artificial Intelligence Data Centres - no more bungs for biomass! #AxeDrax

We are so grateful to our amazing legal team, who worked their wigs off on this case: @marcwillerskc.bsky.social of @gardencourtlaw.bsky.social, and @estelledehon.bsky.social and Ruchi Parekh of @cornerstonebarristers.com

So much hard work... and such wonderful results β€ͺ

πŸ’₯ That’s a game-changer for every community resisting dirty energy.

This wasn’t just a courtroom win. It was the result of relentless grassroots organising, years of resistance, and the strength of communities who refused to back down.

πŸŽ‰ One Year On – We Won, and We’re Still Winning! πŸ†

One year ago today, Weald Action Group made history. We took our case over Environment Impact Assessments to the Supreme Court - and won!

Our victory has forced planning authorities to account for the true climate impact of fossil fuel projects.

One year ago today, we won a landmark legal victory. We are so proud of the impact it continues to have.

This blog post reflects on the ways in which our fight against one oil development in Surrey is making the future safer for everyone.

New government guidance on assessment of offshore oil and gas sites is a big step forward – Weald Action Group

The government has published new guidance on how to assess the downstream emissions from new offshore oil and gas projects. (That's the effects from burning the oil & gas.)

This was a direct result of our legal victory last year. Here's our quick take:

The county planning officer said if UKOG can't pay for restoration, the responsibility would fall on the landowner.

What if the landowner can't afford it either? Would council tax payers have to foot the bill?

Action over delays at mothballed oil site Council officials have taken action against the operator and owner of a West Sussex dormant oil site over clean-up delays.

Great that West Sussex County Council has served notice on UKOG at Broadford Bridge. The site has been dormant 7 years and restoration is long overdue.

Campaigners have often asked planners to require a restoration bond for oil & gas sites. This is always dismissed.

Great victory, due largely to the Supreme Court ruling that emissions from burning fossil fuels must be taken into account, by @wealdactiongroup.bsky.social & @sarahfinch.bsky.social!

We must now support those in Cumbria who are campaigning for badly-needed green jobs to support the local economy.

We are incredibly proud that our win on Horse Hill clarified that developments can't legally be permitted without full information on all their likely impacts on the environment and climate - one of the grounds for refusing the megafarm.

Well done to all the campaigners who opposed this.

How Edge Fund grants support the grassroots groups? 'The grant went towards costs for our website and to produce a video to explain what was happening at Horse Hill Oil State' by Weald Action Group.

The campaign had a historic win in 2024 as the Supreme Court judged that Surrey County Council acted unlawfully by giving planning permission for oil production at Horse Hill without considering the climate impacts from burning the extracted oil. This has far-reaching results against the UK fossil sector. 'This is a welcome step towards a safer, fairer future' Sarah, Weald Action Group. 'If Horse Hill is considered unlawful all new oil and gas projects should be!' Laure, from Stop Rosebank

UKOG can't issue any more shares this year without the agreement of a general meeting.

They must face multi-million £££ costs for restoring sites at Horse Hill and Broadford Bridge (and Turkey?)

Their only income is a tiny trickle from Horndean.

Thanks @drillordrop.bsky.social for reporting.

Including when, as in this case, the production has to be boosted by trucking in toxic waste from other sites and injecting it into the ground.

It really is madness. We all need to redouble our efforts to end ecocidal fossil fuel production, on land and at sea.

Waste fluid can be trucked to Surrey oil site for disposal Waste fluid from oil wells across southern England can be tankered to a village in the Surrey green belt, where it will be pumped underground, councillors decided this morning.

It's so frustrating that Councils still feel compelled to accept that extraction of 'indigenous oil' (for export) constitutes β€œvery special circumstances” to justify oil production in a climate emergency.
