Used wisely, it could give interesting data to teachers / teacher educators. It also records and annotates classroom conversations. Of course, it might just be implemented by institutions to 'police' students and teachers. Either way, this technology is now here, so I think it's worth knowing about.

AI’s future for students is in our hands | Brookings Mary Burns and Rebecca Winthrop explore the role artificial intelligence will play in shaping the future of student learning and development.

The Brookings rpt authors: "AI’s risks currently overshadow its benefits...The threats of AI to students—including from unsupervised out-of-school use—are primarily cognitive, emotional, and social. These risks are qualitatively different from challenges posed by previous educational technologies."

As a result, ChtGPT needs to be treated as a distinct interlocutor tyoe, not a human substitute. Will that change the way learners speak? Can prompt design choices help?

e.g.: ChatGPT has a 2.2s pause threshold, so the AI often takes over before the learner finishes thinking; responses can be verbose, leading fewer opportunites for the learners to speak; no multimodal cues to help the learners.
