this is true for male/female outmatching male/male, but if you also add in female/female and the various flavors of enby gender/sex presentations, you do get a post count above male/female's count
this also doesn't take into account solo male pieces that are clearly meant for gay people, lol

it most likely isn't. e621 uses tag aliasing to convert synonym tags into one single tag for convenience, and they're pretty thorough with it. this applies to both searches and to actually tagging posts. try it - if you type "gay" into the search bar, you'll get posts tagged with male/male
