So this happened an hour ago. I donβt think Iβve seen red this deep in a long time. You could see it quite clearly with the naked eye. #aurora

I really need to get to bed, but I just poked my head out the back door again. This is the view from my deck. All of this is looking south. When the geomagnetic storms are like this, the oval overshoots me and stretches into the US, which is why so many are seeing it tonight. #aurora

The galaxy cutting dramatically across the frame of this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image is a slightly warped dwarf galaxy known as UGC1281. Seen here from an edge-on perspective, this galaxy lies roughly 18 million light-years away in the constellation of Triangulum (The Triangle). The bright companion to the lower left of UGC 1281 is the small galaxy PGC 6700, officially known as 2MASX J01493473+3234464. Other prominent stars belonging to our own galaxy, the Milky Way, and more distant galaxies can be seen scattered throughout the sky. The side-on view we have of UGC 1281 makes it a perfect candidate for studies into how gas is distributed within galactic halos β the roughly spherical regions of diffuse gas extending outwards from a galaxyβs center. Astronomers have studied this galaxy to see how its gas vertically extends out from its central plane, and found it to be a quite typical dwarf galaxy. However, it does have a slightly warped shape to its outer edges, and is forming stars at a particularly low rate. European Space Agency Credit: ESA/NASA, Acknowledgement Luca Limatola

The work highlights the role of the Sunβs magnetic landscape, or topology, in the development of solar eruptions that can trigger space weather events around Earth. On Oct. 24, 2014, NASAβs SDO observed an X-class solar flare erupt from a Jupiter-sized sunspot group, shown here in this video. happy halloween! i hope everyone had fun tonight!
What a crazy night, we went into it not expecting much since the solar storm was forecast for after sunrise in central Europe. However, before the sun had even set, I got the alert that the first CME had impacted Earth, so the chances immediately looked a lot better. What then unfolded surpassed even our wildest expectations. We ended up driving to this satellite ground station south of Ammersee in southern Bavaria and just when we arrived we spotted the first diffuse pillars north of us. We experienced three waves of incredibly strong Aurora, especially for our rather Southern latitude. During the second wave we saw individual pulsating filaments dancing over our heads. What a breathtaking experience! Many thanks to Christopher for accompanying me on this adventure, Max for being an all round great guy, and Sebastian who lent me his wide angle lenses that made these shots possible.

With a proposed 263 telescopes spanning nearly 9,000 km (214 of the dishes being concentrated in the U.S. Southwest), the Next Generation Very Large Array is expected to have about 10x the sensitivity and 10x the spatial resolution of the current Very Large Array or ALMA!
