Illustration of the Matthew effect and the early-career setback effect. An academic, say Alice, first applies for early-career funding in 2015. She received early-career funding, and goes on to reapply for later-career funding in 2020. According to the Matthew effect, the chances of Alice receiving later-career funding is higher when she received early-career funding. Alice showed a high Mean Field Citation Rate (MFCR) before receiving her early-career funding, and similarly a high MFCR in between the early-career and later-career applications. According to the early-career setback effect, had she instead not received funding, her "Between" MFCR would have been higher. We not only study the "Between" MFCR, we also study the MFCR after the early-career application ("Post (early)") and after the later-career application ("Post (later)").

Is anyone else getting a peculiar email about retracting articles from "Pakistan Journal of Life and Social Sciences"?

- There are a lot of myths and anecdotal knowledge out there - we need to talk more about what we want to use GenAI for; including why, how, and when.

- What this is, varies by field, and especially how you produce new knowledge. What is fine in one field may not be in another - guidelines and policies need to reflect or accomodate this.

- Researchers have a pretty good idea about what they consider good and bad research practice, and tools like GenAI are used in accordance with recommendations about good, ethical practice.

We identified three main perceptions of the role of GenAI in research, and a number of recommendations for writing policies about GenAI for academic research. Some of the most important takeaways here are:

My colleagues and I have been sharing blogs and news about a survey we did on how researchers use generative AI - that study is now published and openly available here:

Added context, since polls can only be very short:
It seems like a somewhat standard practice now, that editors create reviewer accounts without consent or contact, as a service, so the potential reviewer doesn't have to do it themself. It used to be the opposite. #peerreview #reviewer2

Journal editors create reviewer accounts automatically, with username and password, without prior consent. What are your thoughts on this?

1️⃣ It's a great service, it saves me some hassle.
2️⃣ I don't really care.
3️⃣ It feels icky and predatory.

If AI is an accelerator, will research need speed limits? - Research Professional News Junior researchers’ enthusiasm for technology needs careful guidance, say Jens Peter Andersen and Serge Horbach

Young researchers have embraced AI as an accelerator of their work. If that is to help science rather than damage it, they need careful guidance, say Jens Peter Andersen @ipoga.bsky.social and Serge Horbach. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-euro...

Full transparency: the open call is open to all applicants, and there are no guarantees for a job offer. I am offering to co-develop an application that addresses disruption in science, with plenty of room for personalising it.
Granted applications are fully funded three-year projects.

What is disruption in science?

I am looking for a prospective PhD student to study disruption theoretically, qualitatively and quantitatively at Aarhus University.

If you are interested in developing your own project under our open call, in collaboration with me, please get in touch.

The Christian implications of God creating mankind and our Earth, without a mention of other worlds or life in the vastness of the Universe is historically meaningful, but to me, philosophically sorrowful. And as Carl Sagan (in Pale Blue Dot) goes on to argue, grounds for much chauvinism.
