The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" peaks at #11 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart. It was the first Beatles' release that none of the group played instruments on, although John and George did contribute harmony vocals. Four violins, two cellos and two violas, performed a score.

September 24th 1988 Lou Reed returns to his old haunt CBGB to play some songs with Tom Tom Club, including "Femme Fatale," which he has recently re-recorded with the group.

🇨🇦 September 24th 2003 - Gordon Lightfoot was inducted into the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame. Gord placed 21 songs on the Canadian Top 40 and six on the Billboard Top 40, including "If You Could Read My Mind" (#5 in 1970), "Sundown" (#1 in 1974) & "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (#2 in 1976)

September 24th 1960: Hank Ballard and the Midnighters' "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" enters the Hot 100, joining their songs "Finger Poppin' Time" and "The Twist" (the original version) on the chart. It's the first time an act has had three songs on the Hot 100 at the same time.

September 24th 1957 The movie Mister Rock And Roll, starring the famous disc jockey Alan Freed, debuts in America. In the film, Freed tells the story of Rock and Roll, with performances by Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon and Brook Benton.

September 24th 1966: Jimi Hendrix moved from the United States to the UK, where he would spend the next nine months touring and recording before returning home to play the Monterey International Pop Festival in California.

September 24th 1967 - At the end of a six-day shoot at RAF West Malling, a Royal Air Force base in Kent, The Beatles film the dance scene to their song "Your Mother Should Know" for their upcoming movie Magical Mystery Tour. Paul McCartney's flower is black, contributes to the "Paul is dead" myth.

September 22, 1965 San Francisco, the Great Society, with Grace Slick , made its stage debut at the Coffee Gallery in North Beach, CA. They were closely associated with the burgeoning Bay Area acid rock scene. After a lengthy separation, Jerry and Grace Slick divorced in 1971.

September 22 1980 - John Lennon signs with Geffen Records after David Geffen promises to release his next album without even hearing any of the songs. Sadly, only one LP, "Double Fantasy" came to fruition before Lennon's death the following December.

September 22 1958 "To Know Him Is To Love Him" by The Teddy Bears enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #88. Lead singer Annette Kleinbard was backed by Phil Spector on guitar, Marshall Leib on bass and last minute addition Sandy Nelson on drums.

September 22 1963 - The Jaynetts' version of "Sally Go Round The Roses" peaks at #2 on the Hot 100. The song's B-side was the instrumental track to "Sally Go Round The Roses" credited to Sing Along Without The Jaynetts.

Sonny Curtis, the legendary Texas-born songwriter, guitarist, and member of Buddy Holly's backing band The Crickets, passed away last Friday September 19th, at the age of 88 following a sudden illness. His song"I Fought the Law"—a raw, rebellious anthem dashed off in an afternoon.

1989..Irving Berlin, Russian-American composer and lyricist considered one of the greatest songwriters in history ("Always"; "God Bless America"; "White Christmas"; "Cheek To Cheek"), dies at 101. His music forms a large part of the Great American Songbook.

Terry Reid, British musician championed by the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page and more, dies aged 75

The Newport Pop Festival, held in Costa Mesa, California, on August 3–4, 1968, was the first music concert ever to have more than 100,000 paid attendees. Harvey "Humble Harve" Miller, a Top 40 disc jockey for 93 KHJ-AM in Los Angeles, was hired to promote the show and hosted with Wavy Gravy.

Remembering Arthur Lee March 7, 1945 – August 3, 2006. LA band Love - Vocals, guitar, drums, keyboards. Lee's first musical instrument was the accordion. His first known recording is from 1963. The Ninth Wave was released by his first band, the instrumental outfit called The LAGs.

June 8th 1974 David Bowie started a 4 week run at the top of the UK charts with his third No.1 album 'Diamond Dogs'. The cover art features Bowie as a striking half-man, half-dog, painted by Belgian artist Guy Peellaert. It was controversial as the full painting clearly showed the hybrid's genitalia

June 8th 1969 Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts visited Brian Jones at his home in Cotchford Farm to discuss his future in the group. The Stones later issued a press statement saying that Brian was leaving The Rolling Stones.

June 8th 1963: The Crystals' 'Da Doo Ron Ron' peaked at No.3 on the US singles chart. Produced by Phil Spector, who used a multi-track recording system to build the song layer upon layer to achieve a result that became known as a "wall of sound". Backing musicians were members of the Wrecking Crew.

Remembering Vincent Crane 21 May 1943 – 14 Feb 1989. Keyboardist, best known as the organist for the Crazy World of Arthur Brown (he was a co-writer of that group's 1968 hit single "Fire"). Crane and drummer Carl Palmer eventually left to form Atomic Rooster.

1976 "Silly Love Songs" by Paul McCartney & Wings goes to #1 in America, where it stays for five weeks.

1972 The Guess Who record their Live At The Paramount album in Seattle.

1968 Cream's Disraeli Gears is certified gold.

May 22nd 1967: The Monkees release Headquarters, proving they're more than a group of actors who just play a band on TV. Although it's their third album, it's the first that allows them creative control over songwriting and performing without relying on session musicians.

May 22nd 2023 - Chas Newby, who enjoyed a two-week stint as The Beatles' bassist in 1960, passed away at the age of 81. A then 19-year-old Newby joined the band in December, 1960 after they returned to Liverpool from Germany and needed a bassist, as Stuart Sutcliffe decided to remain in Hamburg.
