This year is the 60th anniversary of the publication of Death of a Naturalist. The poem still as relevant today 💔

Did that once on friend's father's farm. Rabbits rather than gophers. Remember it like it was yesterday 💔

When you think about Death of a Naturalist there are probably other, better known, poems - but this was the one that caught me today.

DOAN is an astonishing piece of work for a first collection

From Death of a Naturalist this addresses darker & uncomfortable elements of rural life, but also speaks of colonial violence

‘I just shrug, bloody pups. It makes sense’ a reminder that when violence becomes commonplace, it becomes acceptable

I love that story ❤️🌳💪

There is a sense of loss right from the beginning of this poem. That hug from an empty shirt.

It also reminds us how small, repetitive acts of mundane service can ground us.

Chatting to someone today who was struggling to open a bank account because when he arrived here the immigration services spelt his name incorrectly

He spoke of his struggle to get here. That all he had were the clothes on his back & his name, and now that had been taken too

Wait and weight 😊

When it's done well it's very effective. It can be slippery though - singular, plural, self, others both...

Sometimes the ambiguity in its slipperiness can be useful too 😊
