Poem is by Louise GlΓΌck
The whole of the World's Wife is brilliant.
Same story and another perspective
π
This from Meadowlands, which uses the Odyssey as a conceit to tell the story of deteriorating marriage. There are 3 broken hearts
There is the detachment of not taking sides, but also the detachment of time β the speaker looking back as an adult and seeing things differently

Yes! Reading the 2 side by side is interesting.
It's a great poem
This, a parody of Shakespeareβs Sonnet 55, is a counterpoint to yesterday's poem - beauty, love and verse will be forgotten.
Also connecting to my other recent posts by Galleymore & Olzmann addressing eco-poetics.
Some of her predictions have already come to pass

Imagine these Elizabethan sweethearts enjoying a beach walk & Spenser stopping to write her name in the sand (maybe inside a heart!)
Her rebuke (feisty for the time), & his reply, even after death their love & his verse will live on
Today these words are still strong

Wondered what had happened, thought for sure I had been following you.
Hope you get your account sorted. That's annoying thing to happen
It would be an honour

Challenging Cage's philosophy regarding silence & the idea that all sounds, even "nothing," can be music
That poetry that's saying nothing is saying something

Love that poems generate conversations.
I think you will like the collection this is from. Poem about class struggles, family, love, poetry, and music.
Tony is an outstanding performance poet. Loads of videos of him online

DOAN is an astonishing piece of work for a first collection
From Death of a Naturalist this addresses darker & uncomfortable elements of rural life, but also speaks of colonial violence
βI just shrug, bloody pups. It makes senseβ a reminder that when violence becomes commonplace, it becomes acceptable

#SeamusHeaneySunday
I recently bought a copy of βThe Poems of Seamus Heaneyβ, it is a monster of a book!
I have set myself a challenge to read one collection from the book each week.
Every Sunday my #poemoftheday post will feature a poem from that weekβs collection.

The collection is wonderful

I did keep some of my toys. My kids play with my lego. Still have it.
I think this poem best captures the notion of eco-poetics in Isabel Galleymoreβs collection Baby Schema
Pushing the idea of motherhood, childhood, and baby cutesiness against the environmental crisis of the Anthropocene.

I love that story β€οΈπ³πͺ
17.01.2026 07:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There is a sense of loss right from the beginning of this poem. That hug from an empty shirt.
It also reminds us how small, repetitive acts of mundane service can ground us.
The poem will be waiting when we return to it

Written not to shame, but to speak; carrying anger that is measured, thoughtful, & deliberately restrained
It addresses directly this indefensible act of ego fuelled vandalism, but also carries judgement on our own selfish, fleeting acts that have ecological consequences

Chatting to someone today who was struggling to open a bank account because when he arrived here the immigration services spelt his name incorrectly
He spoke of his struggle to get here. That all he had were the clothes on his back & his name, and now that had been taken too

Sometimes the ambiguity in its slipperiness can be useful too π
