Kind of sucks now, so if you are looking to download high quality songs you need a converter (converting FLAC to ALAC does not lose any quality). If you are ripping your own cds then it's not as much of an issue as iTunes will do that for you.

I got a second hand iPod classic, try get a 5th or 7th gen if you can as they can be modded to use SD cards instead of hard drives and can have huge capacities and the batteries can last even longer. (6th gens have a capacity limit)

Only issue with iPods is that they don't support FLAC, and itunes
