As teachers in Scotland head towards the summer break, some thoughts on β€˜what to do’. Whilst it’s tempting to plan to do lots of school tasks, it’s vital you relax. If you HAVE to work, put specific dates in the calendar and stick to them, that way you can enjoy the rest of the holiday guilt-free.

Teaching practice is hard to change because it is highly complex and creates high cognitive load for the teacher.

Habits become ingrained and are hard to change.

Student teachers: don’t forget to make the most of whole-school experiences whilst you’re on placement. Staff meetings, in-service days, inter-disciplinary projects etc. are all great opportunities to build positive relationships across the school.

As you approach the end of your spring placements, take the chance to have some fun (and take some risks) with your classes. With the support of your department, experiment with activities, tasks and resources. Find a way to get out of the classroom and explore yours and their boundaries.
