As climate and disturbance regimes change, forest reorganization is key to maintain the forest carbon sink. Great new work led by @christinadollinger.bsky.social w/ @monicagturner.bsky.social, @akkym.bsky.social and many others. dx.doi.org/10.1029/2025...
12.02.2026 09:38 โ ๐ 13 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Job offer: PostDoc in โBiodiversity and ecosystem functioning in European forests in the face of global changesโ 80-100% (f/m/d) The aim of the projects is to investigate the impact of global changes on temperate forests toward designing management plans that allows ecosystem resilience and high levels of biodiversity. Within these projects, you will develop standard and more efficient ecological monitoring methodologies to understand how different aspects of biodiversity and/or associated ecosystem processes, in particular deadwood decomposition, in forests are altered by global change factors such as climate change, disturbances, and management-induced structural changes at different spatial and temporal scales. Through this research, you will gain a better mechanistic understanding of these relationships as a basis for predicting future changes related to management decisions and climate change. To measure biodiversity, you will use cutting-edge DNA-based methods, such as e-DNA metabarcoding of fungi, from soil and dead wood, and detecting arthropods and mammals from vegetation surfaces. Data on biodiversity and forest functions will be analyzed in an interdisciplinary manner. Depending on your skills and expertise, you can focus on more technical aspects of biodiversity quantification using eDNA, fundamental ecological research questions on modelling ecosystem processes or the more applied design of management practices. You are expected to publish your findings in high-impact journals and present them at international conferences. You hold a PhD degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences or in a related field and have a strong background forest ecology, in DNA-based biodiversity assessments (e-DNA metabarcoding), bioinformatics and multivariate statistical analyses, and/or experimental planning. Furthermore, we expect very good knowledge in R programming, a good command of English, as well as strong skills in scientific paper writing.

Nurturing both trees and people is essential for forest restoration, which can only be achieved through sustained long-term efforts.

It was a wonderful opportunity to explore such a beautiful protected area and to discuss our ongoing collaborations. Thanks, @sebseibold.bsky.social.
This is the beauty of academiaโbeing able to keep meeting friends through our work while contributing to science and society.
Great talk by @rupertseidl.bsky.social today at BC3 on the past, present, and future of forest disturbances in Europe and what this means for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Especially interesting to see how forest recovery is rapid in most of Europe, but not in Central and Southern Iberia.

Yippie, my paper is now out in Global Ecology and Biogeography!
Basically, we tried to destroy (simulated!) forest landscapes
And despite increasing disturbances 100-fold and decreasing regeneration by 99% - we didn't manage to! (in most cases anyways)

The latest DroughtNet paper is out in Science today! Using coordinated experiments across six continents and 74 sites, the International Drought Experiment found differences between the effects of extreme droughts and more typical droughts... (1/3) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
16.10.2025 20:46 โ ๐ 41 ๐ 20 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 2Such an excellent paper. Climate change is indeed reshaping forests in ways that threaten the forestry sector, biodiversity, carbon storage, and ecosystem resilience. For many stakeholders, it is critically important to strengthen the quantification of these impacts and to ensure accountability.

Visit to the experimental site in Berchtesgaden National Park.
I am now deeply impressed by how science and practice are effectively integrated here. For sure, three must be lots of difficulties but also opportunities.
I have learned about Bavarian silvicultural systems and the challenges they are facing. Then I have realized how our systems in Japanese forests are conservative and hesitant to change/adaptโฆ
