ACP-UK has written to Wes Streeting MP, Sir James Mackey CEO, NHSE and Claire Murdoch National Director for Mental Health, NHSE to advocate for the formal, embedded inclusion of clinical psychology leadership across the design and delivery of NHS reforms.. 1/2

ACP-UK is establishing a public directory of HCPC-registered CPs who act as expert witnesses. This directory will only be open to members who must remain subject to statutory regulation and can demonstrate CPD in the role of an expert witness in the courts/tribunals where they offer their services.5

Our position is that readily available poor-quality evidence remains poor-quality evidence. We will continue to work with the FPRC to ensure only HCPC-registered practitioner psychologists with appropriate specialism-specific proficiencies act as expert witnesses when assessing children or adults. 4

We highlighted some things that need addressing. In particular the merging of statutory regulation with voluntary registers. We also cautioned against exemptions from these necessary safeguards on the grounds of delay. 3/5

ACP-UK was instrumental in bringing this consultation to the table and welcomed the efforts of the FPRC to ensure a high standard of reliable expert evidence, and safeguards to protect participants in the family justice system from the misuse of psychological evidence. 2/5

ACP-UK has made progress in ensuring that this does not continue in our family courts, where some of the most vulnerable in society are assessed without such regulatory safeguards, but the case for legislation to protect the public more widely from unqualified or disbarred ‘psychologists’ remains.

There is no requirement for them to be regulated if they avoid the protected titles, and no one to complain to if they cause harm. 5/6

Although practitioner psychologist titles such as ‘clinical psychologist’ are regulated, many unregulated ‘psychologists’ practise independently of any form of regulation and offer their services to the public without the safeguards afforded by NHS or legislative structures. 4/6

ACP-UK has for several years led the call for similar safeguards for the title ‘psychologist’ which to date the government has considered unnecessary. 3/6

Government agrees to protect ‘nurse’ title in law | Nursing Times The government has agreed to protect 'nurse' in law to prevent further misuse of the job title, marking a victory for campaigners. Read more.

It is powerful to recognise that the title ‘nurse’ needed to be brought within government regulation, and that the title ‘registered nurse’ provided insufficient public protection.2/6
