It is with immense excitement that I share the Damer lab's most recent publication in the journal Cell Calcium. This is an especially meaningful moment for me as I was fortunate enough to be co-first author on this publication alongside my previous mentor, Dr. Amber Ide, PhD!

Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025!
Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide!

The cost-saving claims donβt hold up. Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity, research showsβa total of $93 billion in 2023 alone.
βItβs incredible to me that we would give up this thing that has such obvious societal benefits,β says biologist Mark Peifer.

Nice to see a supportive statement from all the unions on my campus in the student newspaper.

Per an NIH source:
βDiscussions with colleagues have suggested that if the universities all come together and raise hell about the delays to funding caused by not holding meetings, that might move the needle. From every state. There are well-funded universities in red states that will be impacted.β
The Damer Lab's NIH funding helps elucidate the relationship between protein-protein interactions and their role in calcium homeostasis. Because of our funding, we can better understand the molecular mechanisms of cancer biology.

To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what youβve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms).
Iβll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.
I think some people hear βgrantsβ and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.
βPausingβ grants means people donβt eat.
Thank you, Dr. Karp!

This grant supports scientists traveling to share their work and aims to highlight work with rare model organisms (like Dictyostelium discoideum!)

Thankful for fun opportunities to share science with the general public! One of my favorite things about science is the chance to explain its impact to different groups of people.
