It is with immense excitement that I share the Damer lab's most recent publication in the journal Cell Calcium. This is an especially meaningful moment for me as I was fortunate enough to be co-first author on this publication alongside my previous mentor, Dr. Amber Ide, PhD!

America will pay dearly for the NIH’s mindless war on wokeness and DEI Colleges, businesses, patients, students, workers, and US excellence will all sufferβ€”and for what?

The cost-saving claims don’t hold up. Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity, research showsβ€”a total of $93 billion in 2023 alone.

β€œIt’s incredible to me that we would give up this thing that has such obvious societal benefits,” says biologist Mark Peifer.

Loggerhead turtles have an uncontrollable urge to dance whenever they anticipate foodβ€”a trait scientists used to test whether the reptiles can memorize their favorite feeding sites based on Earth’s magnetic fields.

The tuberculosis outbreak in Kansas is alarming. It's not the biggest in US history though, CDC says A yearlong outbreak of tuberculosis in the Kansas City, Kansas area has taken local experts aback, even if it does not appear to be the largest outbreak of the disease in U.S. history as a state…

A tuberculosis outbreak in Kansas City, Kan., has led to 67 active cases and two deaths, primarily in Wyandotte County. Though severe, the CDC notes at least two larger recent TB outbreaks in the U.S. 🩺 πŸ›Ÿ

Letter to the editor: Welcome and belonging As we settle into the new semester, the Joint Union Council reminds us that students have support from all over the campus community in a letter to the editor.

Nice to see a supportive statement from all the unions on my campus in the student newspaper.

Per an NIH source:

β€œDiscussions with colleagues have suggested that if the universities all come together and raise hell about the delays to funding caused by not holding meetings, that might move the needle. From every state. There are well-funded universities in red states that will be impacted.”

The Damer Lab's NIH funding helps elucidate the relationship between protein-protein interactions and their role in calcium homeostasis. Because of our funding, we can better understand the molecular mechanisms of cancer biology.

To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what you’ve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms).

I’ll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.

White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I think some people hear β€œgrants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

β€œPausing” grants means people don’t eat.

I'd also like to share an opportunity for scientists to receive an external travel grant through Boster Biological Technology. This grant supports scientists traveling to share their work and aims to highlight work with rare model organisms (like Dictyostelium discoideum!)

I was fortunate enough to receive an internal grant through Central Michigan University. One of the requirements for being awarded the grant was to make a video! Who says science can't be rewarding AND fun?

Bridging the gap between lab coats and beer mugs Cancer research isn’t just for labs or textbooks. Cody Morrison, a CMU PhD student, made it the topic of a lively barroom conversation.

Thankful for fun opportunities to share science with the general public! One of my favorite things about science is the chance to explain its impact to different groups of people.
