11.08.2025 13:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I saw this on the news earlier - very sad and your film of the calf is heartbreaking. This isnβt a subject I know anything about but do we have any better ideas these days what causes these mass strandings?

An image showing a White-tailed bumble bee and a Small White butterfly sharing the nectar from the purple flower on a thistle head. The bumble bee is mostly back to the camera so we can see its white tail and yellowish head with its dark, transparent wings folded on its back. The butterfly is left side on to the camera showing the slightly green tinge on the underside of its left wing and the black dot on the upper side of its right wing. Its antennae are up and its tongue is probing the flower. Taken in north Yorkshire in July 2025.

This is an image of my young son on his first camping trip. The photo is shot from behind him, looking over his head as he sits in a camping chair staring intently at the blazing camp fire and upright fire logs.
For #AlphabetChallenge #WeekFforFire one of my favourite images of my older son at his first camp trip, fascinated by the blazing camp fire.
08.08.2025 10:10 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is an image of a male Osprey in flight above the scrape at RSPB Lochwinnoch having just caught a fish (probably a Roach). It is flying toward the camera with the fish gripped in its left foot. Its wings are arched up showing their mottled dark but largely white markings and the brown fingers on each wing tip. Its crown is white surrounded by brown cheeks, eye stripe and nape which highlight its bright yellow eye. Its underside and legs are almost all white and the lack of a dark collar indicates this is a male. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in August 2025.
This is an image of a male Osprey in flight above the scrape at RSPB Lochwinnoch having just caught a fish (probably a Roach). It is flying toward the camera with the fish gripped in its left foot. Its wings are horizontal but their mottled dark, largely white markings and the brown fingers on each wing tip can just be seen. As it banks to the left its head is turned to the left showing its white crown surrounded by brown cheeks, eye stripe and nape which highlight its bright yellow eye. Its underside and legs are almost all white and the lack of a dark collar indicates this is a male. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in August 2025.
For #FlyDay this male Osprey is one of two birds who have been putting on regular fishing shows at @rspbscotland.bsky.social #Lochwinnoch recently. Amazing to see, especially up close.

Ringed Plover Chick (Charadrius hiaticula) - So pleased that the Ringed Plovers I had been observing earlier in the year have had a second brood following the loss their first clutch of eggs to predation.

I posted this on a previous #InsectThursday thinking they were Common Blue Damselflies but I now think they are the (rarer?) Blue-Tailed Damselfly - would that be correct?

This is a right side rear view of a Black-tailed Skimmer dragonfly perching on a rock amongst light green reeds beside a lake. Its transparent wings are lowered against the rock so that we can see its dark, bulbous head, its thorax and its light blue abdomen with a black tip. Taken in North Yorkshire in July 2025.
This is a left side view of an Emperor dragonfly - Britain's bulkiest dragonfly - in flight above a lake. The rotation of its transparent wings is frozen so that we can see its light blue bulbous head with green lower jaws and its broad green thorax tapering into its light blue and black abdomen. Taken in North Yorkshire in July 2025.

This is an image of a Little Ringed Plover standing in muddy water mid foraging for food. Its black collar, mask and black bill stand out against its white underside and fawn crown and back. Its characteristic round black eye with bright yellow ring can also be seen clearly. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in August 2025.
This is an image of a Snipe wading in the muddy water on the scrape at RSPB Lochwinnoch foraging for food on the pond bed. It is side on to the camera and its dark striped crown and dark eye stripe against its cream face are clear. Its underside is mottled brown against fawn, turning dark mottled towards its rear. Its back is brown and black mottled and striped. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in August 2025.
