An inspirational scientist & friend. An example of combining scientific excellence, courage, hard work and really importantly; kindness. (Yes I’m biased, but it’s true nevertheless)

Ceiling of venue hosting the final ASAP all hands meeting somewhere in Europe
Continuing the theme of venue ceilings (admittedly its had poor uptake and i think no one else has succumb to this potentially riveting trend) but as the hotel carpet at this event is not going to impress @scurry.bsky.social i submit this interesting (if i do say so myself) ceiling venue …

Titan krios I (a 300 KeV Cryo transmission electron microscope) with its 10 yr birthday hat in the experimental hall of Diamond Light Source.
krios 1 @diamondlightsource.bsky.social celebrated 10 years of user operations last week - many people thought we were mad to plonk it down in this spot in the synchrotron …but its still there as we ended up with a lot more in a very small space of time !

Some Welsh contributions to railway history – part two
Wales has a little-known yet incredible history in locomotion. This Railway 200 commemorative year is a great time to make Welsh achievements better known

Screenshot from article reads:
In every case, the government is typified by a lack of confidence in communication. It is unwilling to lead. It is unprepared to make the argument. It does not have the courage to state clearly what is happening, what it wants and how it will get there. Instead, it operates in the background, saying whatever it thinks necessary to secure goals which you can vaguely discern by virtue of unrelated actions.
This is why we're all so confused. Sometimes you wake up and read what they have to say about Trump, or see how they will decimate our university sector to reduce immigration numbers, and you feel the anger rise up in you. Sometimes you recognise what they're achieving, on the hush-hush, and convince yourself that they're playing some ingenious game you seem to have misunderstood. It is really very hard to be governed in this way. It is emotionally baffling.
The government does good things and bad things, but this approach to government is disastrous. It's democratically unsound for a party to persistently say one thing and do another, as if governing by subtext. It prevents voter scrutiny and is fundamentally duplicitous. It isn't even effective, because it alienates those who like what you're doing and confuses those who don't. You can see that now. Remainers distrust Starmer as much as Leavers do. No-one is happy.
Good summary of the state of play for Starmer’s underwhelming government from @iandunt.bsky.social
