Landmark court ruling a stark rebuke of Canadian position on climate change The ICJ finding is a watershed moment in the fight against climate change that should send shivers down the spine of the fossil fuel industry, while threatening to upend the legality of Prime Minister...

β€œCanada's pursuit of mega fossil fuel expansion projects stands in stark defiance of the ICJ... This historic ruling is not merely a legal opinion; it's a global mandate that shatters any illusion of continued fossil fuel impunity." www.nationalobserver.com/2025/07/23/n...

There is disturbing and then there is plain immoral. Suspect as welfare reforms take effect we will all see many more tents on pavements of our centre cities with wheelchairs beside them.

New WMO report on near-term climate projections finds that global temperatures are likely to remain at highly elevated levels for the next five years. Barring a large volcanic eruption, it is very unlikely that we see a year as cool as 2022 again. wmo.int/sites/defaul...

Given the number of diesel urban tractors that clog roads and cripple kids lungs, and are considered de rigeur around here, it's hard - despite my loathing of Musk and his agenda - not to have some sympathy for this EV owner.

Someone so worried their Tesla (one of the smallest they make and about the only one suited to the average width of most village roads in this country) will be taken down they've resorted to very polite British pleading. @teslatakedown.com

I was a British tourist trying to leave America. Then I was detained, shackled and sent to an immigration detention centre Graphic artist Rebecca Burke was on the trip of a lifetime. But as she tried to leave the US she was stopped, interrogated and branded an illegal alien by ICE. Now back home, she tells others thinking...

Another white, western, woman's story makes it into the media. Detained for 19 days while trying to *leave* the US after a holiday. It's appalling what happened to her. I can't imagine the suffering that goes on unreported. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

With bills having gone up, it’s time to take energy back into public ownership The obscene profits of the energy industry show the sector is broken

Privatisation Racket.

20 companies controlling UK supply, production, transmission of energy made operating profits of Β£514bn in 2020-24.

Profit margins at electricity/gas supply companies up by 363%; electricity generation up by 198%.

They get subsidies too.

Rainfall measured over the orange alert region in Argentina 1-7 March 2025.

Argentina faced extreme heat, followed by deadly rains. The heat was due to climate change; the rains, less clear. Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

β€œIn Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

Who should pay billions for climate disasters? California and others target Big Oil β€” will that work? States and counties are using a legal strategy that took down Big Tobacco, hoping to make oil companies pay for damage they have denied. But many obstacles remain.

Just as tobacco companies deceived the public about the dangers of nicotine, Big Oil deceived the public about the dangers of fossil fuels. California is suing them big time, after a suit in Hawaii has gained traction.

Bar graph of annual increase in CO2 at Mauna Loa. Below 1 ppm/year around 1960, growing to over 3 ppm for both 2023 and 2024.

The average for the year shows one of the biggest leaps since the measurements started in 1958. Taking my December estimate, the average for 2025 is 424.6 ppm, that's 3.5 ppm more than last year's 421.1 ppm.
The 3.4 ppm jump from 2023 to 2024 was the highest seen so far.

Back in the early 90's when I lived in some very remote parts of the Himalaya I had an early version of MSR's ceramic hand pump water filter. Cost a wad and weighed a fair bit too, but more than earned its keep. And there are smaller versions now for trail hiking.
