Miyazaki never gave one of his movies a bad ending. Takahata did it multiple times. In Kaguya, he even shows us a fleeting dream of a good ending (the opposite from Nausicaa!)
Maybe that's what Takahata got that Miyazaki didn't: that, to borrow Laozi's line, heaven and earth are not humane
