I wrote Snake in the early summer of 2020. Human rights were at the center of the cultural mind in a different way than before. It feels eerily full circle now.
We are still witnessing brutality on our phones. There is still a force that has grown and morphed, trying to take away the autonomy of so many: removing access to gender-affirming care, abortion rights, disability justice, Indigenous rights and the rights that protect those from racial + ethnic bias.
This song stems from a righteous anger. A call to something older and deeper than the patriarchal systems that oppress us. It taps into my own personal experiences of not just systemic violence but the intimate + interpersonal kind. Having experienced assault in my past, this song was a way to transform my own pain into a call to action.
βI canβt wait for an answer before I get free.β
Donβt stop meaning making. Must keep pushing against. Righteous anger as fuel. Stories as hand holding. My small part. Much more for hands to do.
