Trans people centered themselves in a trans case before a very not trans court Not only was Chase Strangio arguing, but a trans plaintiff was in the courtroom Wednesday, as were many other trans people: lawyers, journalists, observers. It matters.

NEW: Trans people centered themselves in a trans case before a very not trans court. Not only was Chase Strangio arguing Wednesday, but a trans plaintiff was in the courtroom, as were many other trans lawyers, journalists, and observers.

"Trans people were not hidden Wednesday, and that matters."

Amazon CTO Werner Vogels on fighting misinformation, tech addiction, and small nuclear reactors In what has become a bit of an annual tradition, I sat down with Amazon CTO Werner Vogels at AWS re:Invent this week. Another annual tradition now is that Vogels, who joined Amazon in 2004, publishes a series of predictions for the next year. It’d be easy…

Khan’s op-ed is worth reading in full, if only to understand the full scope of the issues the FTC is reckoning with when it comes to AI. There are the privacy and business model issues above, along with concerns that too much AI power will be concentrated within a handful of companies; that AI will lead to price discrimination; that it will enable powerful new forms of fraud; and that it will automate discrimination. There’s no talk here about a rogue AGI exterminating the human race to create more paper clips, but maybe that’s more of a Homeland Security thing.

I joke, but it’s honestly encouraging to see the administration thinking this broadly about potential risks. AI industry executives and scientists are constantly warning about impending danger these days, and so it’s good to see the White House taking them seriously. It’s also good to see Biden empowering agencies to take on an enforcement role, given the historically odds in passing any sort of national tech regulation.

AI execs’ big visit to the White House today makes me optimistic that the Biden Administration understands at least some of the risks of the industry’s exponential growth https://www.platformer.news/p/ai-visits-the-white-house
