Composite image showing a pumpkin used for microscopy. A photo of the whole pumpkin with a small 2mm square cut out indicates the area imaged. The main background shows the orange flesh captured with a Keyence digital microscope, with the darker ridge on the left marking the skin. An inset black graph displays the Raman spectrum with strong beta-carotene peaks, explaining the pumpkin’s orange colour. Another inset image from cryo-SEM reveals tightly packed oval cells that make up the pumpkin’s fleshy interior. Images by Raymond Wightman and Daniel Sparrow.
