Demolition of the historic Phillips Congregational Church at the corner of 700 East and 500 South has begun.

The owner of the property is listed as ROBOT BUTCHER SHOP, LLC.

It appears to me that the purpose of the demolition is simply that the parcel is worth more money as an empty lot.

These images showcase a disappearing bed that can transform into a desk. The apartment boom of the early 1900s spurred the popularity of these beds, many of which were for sale in local Salt Lake City furniture shops.

The Critchlow at 379 1st Ave, SLC. Built in 1908 by John Q. Critchlow who promised soundproof floors with brick walls between apartments, a unique and notable feature at the time.

1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments rented in 1908 at $30 (about $1K in 2025 dollars) and $46 (about $1.5K) a month.

The old Foothill Liquor Store at Lamplighter Square, Salt Lake City, was Utah’s first self-service liquor store. It opened Feb 1967. Customers were able to browse and select the items they wanted and then check out at a cashier stand, not ask for something behind a counter. #slchistory

The Judge Building, 8 E 300 S SLC, built in 1907 by Mary Judge and designed by the Judge family architect David C. Dart who also designed the Judge Miner's Home, now part of Judge Memorial High School.

This historic church was built in 1907.

#OTD in 1943: Two USAAF B-24s on a training flight [42-7183 and 42-7408] collide in midair over Salt Lake City (US). All 25 aboard both aircraft die. Inquiry said one of the crews broke SOP, but also noted that ice in the area might have degraded the aircraft´s performance.

An electro-static machine was found in 2000 during renovations of the Karrick Block on Main St in Salt Lake City. These machines generated static electricity and were used to cure a variety of ailments. No idea what happened to it since. #slchistoy

Christmas Street, aka Glen Arbor Street (1735 S 1500 East), in Salt Lake City is a tradition that began in 1946. The 1947 event was described by the Deseret News after the event occurred, and then the street became a Salt Lake City Christmas destination to see. #slchistory #utahhistory

The Lollin and Karrick Buildings on Main Street in #SLC. Trying to get my writing done to post about these buildings. Long story short- the developer was required to preserve them to build the 222 Tower. These two have historic protections because they are local Salt Lake City historic landmarks.

In 1895 at age 60, “Stagecoach Mary” Fields became the first African-American woman mail carrier in the U.S. Armed with a rifle and revolver, she braved Montana’s harsh terrain. Admired by her community for her grit, courage, and kindness, she left a lasting legacy as a trailblazer of the Wild West.
