It was one experience driving through her town, a completely different one to walk through it. More stores appeared empty—though how many were because she arrived before opening?—their gates shuttered. Walls of rusted steel indicated there was no life to be entertained here. The brick buildings had cracks in them, and some had fallen onto the sidewalk, where vines, from overgrown plants in swollen pots, crept along it, and she had to step over them to avoid tripping.  As she walked towards Mary’s diner, she noticed a few posters on a closed toy shop that didn’t used to be here when she was a child. Another store had a large FOR RENT sign that showed wear from the weather. The others were Missing Person posters.  Missing Person?

I don't have any "academy", but I did just write this scene discussing college 🤭 Jolene arguably got everything she wanted at the start of her story, but she can't *enjoy* any of it because she needs to pretend to be someone else.
