One way to sum it up: given the meeting, could have been worse, but Trump got nothing and Putin got a huge win. And given that most people looking at this set of facts would understand that going in, Trump should never have held the meeting at all.

No, he’s not giving Putin Alaska, but he is giving Putin a huge gift: the legitimacy of touching down on US soil at the invitation of a US president. A reward for the full-scale invasion of a sovereign, democratic country that the United States and its European allies support.

5/n Given that Muhammadiyah’s social enterprises are subjected to supervision by state regulatory authorities, the organisation’s leaders feel they need to be included in the Prabowo cabinet in order to ensure that these enterprises do not encounter undue regulatory hurdles.

4/n ... Muhammadiyah and PKS have realised that they needed to be part of the Prabowo administration to protect their institutional interests...and to gain access to state resources in order to retain their influence as a religious organisation and a political party.

I’m not a New Yorker or a socialist and I don’t know if Mamdani would be a good mayor. But I lived in Vienna for 4 months last year; it has been governed by socialists for a century, and it is routinely and deservedly judged one of the most liveable cities in the world. Just sayin’….

Trump still owes the American people answers on why he chose military action. Congress needs to exercise its Constitutional responsibilities and get answers on what immediate threats drove air strikes. Trump has a legal obligation to seek Congressional approval for war. He’s not a king.

ABSTRACT
China's re-emergence as a military power has generated renewed debates about its security building practices regionally and globally. At the same time, it is increasingly perceived as a challenger to the Western-led international order. Intervening in this debate, we develop a first-cut analysis of Chinese conceptions of regional security orders by analysing China's Defence White Papers (DWP) from 2010 to 2019. We conceive of regional security orders as sets of geographically bounded institutions and practices that seeks to engender predictable patterns of military and security relations. Here, we suggest that China's conception of regional security order hinges on two main features: (1) adherence to the doctrine of active-defence, (2) preference for non-military measures such as military diplomacy and economic statecraft to resolve disputes We employ a mixed-methods research study of China's four DWs between 2010 and 2019 to examine China's security partnerships, military exercises, and defence diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific.
🚨New online: paper by Seow and Loh argues that China's conception of regional security order hinges more on active-defence notions and non-military measures than many might think. #openaccess ⬇️

Along with everything else, Trump has threatened to put 50 percent tariffs on the EU, which would basically shut down trans-Atlantic trade. Many people have noted that (a) the EU has very low tariffs on US goods (b) much of the EU surplus in goods is offset by a deficit in services. But ...
